The Weston at YSP

Director Ross Perkin successfully completed The Weston at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park as project architect in 2018. The building comprises a gallery, public foyer, restaurant and shop. The project has won a number of prestigious design awards and was one of six buildings shortlisted for the RIBA Stirling Prize 2019.

Built on a historic quarry site within the 18th-century Bretton Estate, The Weston’s brief had a significant focus on delivering a project to fulfil their ethos of making art and landscape accessible to everyone, to ensure the project would truly welcome all walks of society to enhance physical, intellectual and sensory access to the landscape, ecology and heritage of the historic estate; as well as to sculpture presented elsewhere in the park.

The 660m2 single storey building includes a restaurant, gallery, public foyer and shop. A timber glazed screen curves around the west facade offering views out across the 202-hectare park and sunken south-west facing terrace. The internal spaces are well insulated and naturally ventilated, featuring a pioneering low-energy control system which uses a passive humidity buffer to maintain favourable gallery conditions to showcase contemporary works of arts.
