Stricklandgate House
Emil Eve have been appointed as Architects and Conservation Architects for the NLHF funded £4.7M retrofit and extension of the Grade II Listed Stricklandgate House in Kendal.
The Georgian townhouse sits at the heart of the town. Since its construction in 1776, it has been home to the notable Maude family, the Kendal Museum, the town bank, fire station and council offices and the Kendal Literary and Scientific Society. In 1998 the Stricklandgate House Trust was established to run the building as affordable workspace for local charities, supporting some of Kendal’s most vulnerable residents.
In 2022, Emil Eve were appointed to undertake a feasibility study to explore potential futures for the historic building which resulted in a successful National Lottery Heritage Fund application in 2024.
The project will transform the run-down Grade II property into a low-carbon community hub and charity workspace incorporating an exhibition and event space, conference centre and café. Sustainability is at the heart of the project with the proposals actively pursuing net zero carbon and an ambition for the building to become an exemplar of a sustainable heritage retrofit.
