Regent Studios Workspace
Retrofit of a brutalist concrete building to create a colourful, flexible and creative workspace in Hackney, East London.
This project repurposes a long-lasting, but carbon intensive, brick and concrete structure into a shared studio for small design practices. Designed so that no alterations to the fabric of the existing building have been necessary, the approach could be easily adapted for meanwhile use in other locations and building types.
A large open plan workspace sits alongside flexible spaces for making, research and collaborative working. The standout feature is a family of specially designed modular CNC birch plywood storage elements - used across the studio for bookcases and also an extensive sample library.
An example of the benefits of sharing resources across practices, the sample library is integral to the design process. It also allows visiting clients to experience first hand the materials that will be used for their projects.
