The Wakes

New build education centre for the Gilbert White and the Oates Collections at the Wakes, Selborne. 

The new education centre will provide purpose-built facilities for education to support and enhance the visitor experience of the Grade I Listed museum. The building is embedded into the historic landscape, minimising its massing and visual impact, and integrated into the comprehensive landscape strategy. 

The building will in itself provide material for teaching on the natural world and sustainability, through its low-carbon, highly insulated construction, intensive green roof and features such as the integrated bird-hide that bring birds and insects up close to children within the building. 

The proposal will deliver financial sustainability and greater resilience to the museum - key to its ongoing operation. It will extend the museum’s capacity and it’s ability to deliver it’s aims and objectives in terms of expanding it’s education programme.
